Science Engagement & Outreach

This study will promote public engagement with science through our outreach activities, which is another major goal of this project. Dinosaurs, fossils, crocodiles/birds, bipedalism, evolution and computer simulation are all very popular topics with the general public. That is also why this website is here! This page details our events in this domain of our project, and any other events we run.

DAWNDINOS has teamed up with the City of London Academy (CoLA) during June and July 2017 on an exciting ‘science through art’ after-school outreach project. The project included a series of five ‘Dino Art Club’ sessions for students aged 11-18 years, led by art teacher Ben Frimet.

The project was closely linked to DAWNDINOS scientific research, dinosaur evolution, Triassic ecosystems and extinctions and  presented in a fun, interactive way through different art-based activities. Students used a variety of media to reconstruct their sketches of extinct archosaurs and their environment!

Over the five weeks the project  also looked at species that are under threat of extinction, diversification and adaption as well as climate change issues that are relevant today. 

This week at  the last session students were shown how to construct a museum-type exhibition and present their work with specimen tags akin to real museum exhibits.

Adaptive radiation models were constructed into a hanging mobile pyramid which will be showcased in the Academy’s atrium

 

Last week students looked at how humans are adapted for the things they do.

Opposable Thumb

One of our adaptations is our hand which has an opposable thumb. Students found  that when their thumb was disabled by taping it to their palms everyday activities like putting on  shoes, eating and writing were very difficult to do. They discussed how human hand adaptions have helped  make humans such a successful species on Earth.

Students explored adaptive radiation after surviving a mass extinction. They  were able to illustrate this concept by starting with the early Triassic archosauriform Euparkeria and by rolling dice evolved it ‘artistically’ into  its own ‘fauna’.

Then the students started making wire models of their adapted creatures! These will be developed into 3D forms over the next couple of sessions.
